About the Co-operative

The co-operative has a varied mix of members and is looking for more members to join. Here are some quotes from existing members on why they are part of the co-operative.

“We need to develop sustainable businesses, sustainable communities and a sustainable Scotland. Co-ops are the way to ensure that more people can have more say in that development and that more people can share in the benefits that flow from that sustainable development. Co-ops have been on the go in Scotland since 1761 and still retain their relevance today”

“I know that across our local community, people want to make their own personal contribution to tackling climate change. Promoting ‘community energy’ is an ideal way to do that”

“80% of the dwellings we will be living in, in 2050, are already built, so if we are going to tackle climate change effectively we are going to have to bring all existing houses up to a decent level of insulation AND install some form of low or zero carbon technology before 2050. A back of an envelope calculation suggests this means we have 42 years to work on Scotland’s 2.5 million dwellings – that’s about 60,000 every year, or around 6,000 every year in Edinburgh. At the Edinburgh Community Energy Co-operative we want to get started on behalf of the community”

The co-operative also has a board that meets regularly (see all posts in ‘Meetings’ category). Board members in 2011/12 are:

  • Ian Cooke
  • Johanna Carrie
  • Stan Eadie
